The three at a glance
Fast now, free later, ready for the future
SEO, SEM, and GEO all get you found in search, but each one does it a different way, at a different cost, on a different timeline. Here they are, lined up by how soon each pays off.
Plain definitions
The three, side by side
Here is each one in a sentence, plus what it is good at and roughly how long it takes. These are typical ranges, not promises. Nobody can promise a ranking or an AI mention. Be careful of anyone who does.
- SEO (the free Google results)
- You earn your spot on the normal results page by having pages that truly answer what people search for. Best for: steady clicks that cost nothing and keep coming after the work is done. Timeline: slow. Usually a few months before you see real movement, and longer for busy, crowded search terms.
- SEM / paid search (the ads at the top)
- You buy the top spots on Google and pay each time someone clicks. Best for: showing up right away, testing what people respond to, and getting leads when you need them now. Timeline: instant. You are live the day it turns on, and it stops the day you stop paying.
- GEO (getting named in AI answers)
- You get the AI assistants to know what you do, so they name you when a buyer asks. Think ChatGPT, Google's AI answers, Perplexity, and Gemini. Best for: showing up in the one answer a person reads, instead of a whole page of blue links. Timeline: slow and steady, watched as a trend over months as the AI learns about you.
How to think about it
Which one, and when
You do not have to choose once and for all. Here is a simple way to think about it: fast now, free later, ready for the future.
- 1
Need leads this week? Start with paid ads (SEM).
It is the only one of the three that turns on right away. You are at the top of Google today. You pay per click, you can raise or lower the budget whenever you want, and it shows you which words your buyers respond to.
- 2
Want clicks that keep coming? Build SEO underneath it.
SEO takes longer to pay off, but the clicks are free and they do not stop when you stop spending. The paid ads carry you now while the SEO work climbs quietly in the background. Over time, you lean less on paying per click.
- 3
Want to be there when buyers ask an AI? Add GEO.
More people every month skip the search results and just ask ChatGPT, or read Google's AI answer at the top. GEO is the work that gets you named there. It moves slowly, so the sooner you start, the further ahead you will be.
- 4
Do all three together. They help each other.
One clean, honest, well-organized website does a lot. It helps you climb the free Google results, it gives the AI something clear to quote, and it gives your paid ads a better page to land on. One good base makes all three stronger.
The part people miss
Ranking on Google is not the same as getting named by an AI
You can sit near the top of Google and still be missing from the AI answer. The two do not read the same sources. Only about 11 percent of the places ChatGPT and Perplexity pull from also match what Google uses. We once worked with an excavator that the AI kept calling a paving company, because nothing on the web told it any different. That is not a ranking problem, it is a knowing-who-you-are problem. So GEO is its own job, not a free bonus you get for ranking on Google.
A contest for which page wins
- You can sit near the top of the results
- Earned or paid clicks on a results page
- Asks which page wins the search
Does it even know what you do
- You are named in the one answer read
- Pulls from mostly different sources
- Asks if the AI understands what you do
How Weber handles it
One team runs all three, and tracks them
We are a full-service agency in Lancaster, PA. We handle the paid ads, the SEO, and the GEO in-house, so you get one plan and one report. Not three vendors pointing at each other. Here is the shape of the work.
- Paid ads (SEM): We build and run your Google ads. We watch what brings in real actions, like a call or a filled-out form. Then we adjust, so your budget works harder and does not leak on clicks that go nowhere.
- SEO: We write your key pages to answer the real questions buyers search for. We organize the site so Google can read it. And we keep that free-result work going month after month.
- GEO: We make your site clear enough for an AI to understand. We keep your Google Business Profile and listings correct. And we help you build the real-review habit that AI answers trust most.
- We track it honestly: Before we change a thing, we ask four AI assistants the real questions your buyers ask. We ask logged out. We record whether you get named. That is your starting point. Then we report the trend every month. So you see a true number moving, not a lucky screenshot from one Tuesday.
- No promises, on purpose: We never promise a certain ranking or an AI mention. Nobody can honestly promise that. We show you where you stand, and the work that moves it.
